Dasha Valakhanovitch is a Montreal/Toronto–based artist and designer working across painting, ceramics, sculpture, and spatial design. Rooted in material exploration, her practice balances a minimalist sensibility with a playful approach to form and process.
She began her career as an artist working in painting and drawing, with works exhibited in galleries and held in institutional collections. Alongside her studio practice, she has worked in film and television as an art director, set designer, and specialized props and set decoration maker—moving between expansive productions and the intimate precision of miniature animation sets.
After graduating with a Master of Fine Arts from OCAD University, she founded a ceramic design studio DaCeramics. Her work has been featured in publications including Vogue and Wallpaper, exhibited at the Gardiner Museum, and she has collaborated with artists, designers, and architects across Toronto and Montreal. Her combined experience informs a practice that bridges art and design.
Dasha’s ability to combine her varied backgrounds and skills has enabled her to work coherently across multiple disciplines and to develop her own distinctive expression. A material-driven ethos, combined with an exploratory and playful approach, has shaped a practice that moves fluidly between art, design, and film.
At the core of her practice is a curiosity about how materials communicate meaning and how objects and spaces shape experience and narrative. Moving between conceptual thinking and hands-on making, she uses process as a tool for discovery and refinement.
Understanding the needs and specific context of each project, big or small, is central to her practice. Whether creating functional objects, sculptural works, or designed environments, her approach is characterized by the same level of rigour and attention to detail.
